The Management Leader

Management and leadership, are they the,, quality control, quality control, same or different? The topic has been discussed, debated, and argued over for many years. In the past the terms were used interchangeably in business but in recent years there has developed a clear definition and function for each role.
EM Kelly said, "Remember the difference, quality control, between a boss and a leader; a boss says 'GO!' - a leader says, "Let's go." That is an apt description of the role of a manager, quality control, and leader.
Managers have subordinates and receive authority when the company entrusts them with their management position. By the nature of their roles, the subordinates follow the manager's directives. Managers focus on tactile activities and most times have a more directive, quality control, and controlling approach. This is not a negative trait, being able to organize people to accomplish tasks is an asset to an organization. Managers are paid to get things accomplished and they pass this on, quality control, to those in their charge.
One trait that will help managers to accomplish, quality control, their responsibility is a positive attitude towards those they manage. There is nothing wrong with a pleasant good-natured approach to people and problems. One-reason managers do not use it more often is that under pressure of business people sometimes take themselves to seriously. They start to think about there problems and feelings and forget about others they manage. Another reason managers do not use a positive and pleasant attitude under, quality control, pressure is the myth they believe that a manager must be gruff or grumpy in order to appear firm and decisive and to get things done. The grumpy, gruff, dictator, quality control, manager, quality control, soon loses respect of those he needs to accomplish the work. A manager can be firm and decisive with a smile on their face and a pleasant attitude and be just as convincing once the people learn that the manager means what they say and sticks to it.
Leaders can be organizations managers and have those characteristics but they need an additional set of skills Leaders do not have subordinates, at least not when they are leading. A leader must give up formal authoritarian control when leading because following is always a voluntary activities.
Telling people what to do does not "inspire" people to follow. Leaders appeal to people and show them how to follow and perhaps take risks in situations they, quality control, normally would not do. Excellent leadership skills are innate and therefore harder to learn. One trait that every outstanding leader has is the ability to check, quality control, their ego at the door. They are more concerned with the people they lead and giving them credit for the success and taking the blame when things do not go as planned.
If you think of several of the best leaders you have worked for they all have, quality control, traits in common in addition to giving credit and praise to employees, some of these characteristics are;
Being approachable and easy to talk to always having time for you and listening intently, caring about what was being verbalized.
They rarely became excited or angry at a situation, and they remained positive in the face of adversity and did not let the situation change their outlook.
They showed a consideration for the feelings of the people who worked for them.
Being able to communicate the goals and objective clearly and concisely and obtaining agreement going forward.
Can a manager be a leader or a leader be a manager at the same time? Yes, it is possible for this to happen. Peter Drucker, the outstanding management guru said, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right thing." This tells us that there are two different skill, quality control, sets needed to be both and they must work together. It is possible for an individual to have both, but it is a rare combination blended together. Keep in mind, there is an abundance of manager in business but very few embody the characteristics of a leader.

Revealed! Group Dynamics, Potential Conflicts, Strengths, And Challenges Undressed!

So, Jane and Bob are once again leading a project. This time, they want to make sure they have a, quality control, team that is more productive and has less challenges and conflicts.
There's the million-dollar question.
How do you build a "better" team?
First, Jane and Bob need to understand that putting together, quality control, an effective and productive team is, quality control, more than just grabbing available bodies ("Jim, you doing anything for the next 6 months?") and assigning tasks and roles.
Fortunately, Jane and Bob have the option to hand pick their team members. They start with the following:
--> Define a clear objective/goal for the team and the corresponding metrics to know when the objective/goal has been met. Define the tasks to be done and the roles in the project
--> Assess staff to determine each person's strengths
--> Build the team and assign staff to tasks, quality control, based on the individuals' strengths
Start out strong.
When assessing strengths, look at
--> Who is a starter? This the person you want leading the team - he'll get everyone, quality control, going.
--> Who has that exceptional attention, quality control, to detail? This is the person you want to be in charge of actually getting things done.
--> Who has outstanding analytical skills? This person belongs at the beginning of the project so that she can help get it moving, but her role should end there - she would be bored with the actual implementation.
--> Who is a cheerleader? A cheerleader can be a great asset if you have a tight schedule and absolutely need to keep everyone firmly focused and on track.
--> How long is the project going, quality control, to take? Along with that, you'll want to factor in the team members' individual boredom, quality control, quotient.
Tackle those conflicts to the ground.
Now you have a project with clearly defined tasks and roles, and you've selected team members based on their strengths and how those strengths correspond to the project's needs. Is that it? Does it run smoothly from there? Not always. Jane and Bob have a great team, but they have to keep an eye out for conflicts and challenges that may (and could likely if they don't, quality control, watch out) come up.
Potential conflicts include:
--> asking a starter personality to do the quality control at the end and handle details. The starter sees things at a distance of 50,000 feet; by asking him to handle details, you're requiring him to also, quality control, see at 1,000 feet. He can't do it.
--> asking, quality control, a starter personality to be on this project for an extended period of time. He'll get bored and will lose interest and energy. Eventually, he'll become increasingly less productive. There goes your project.
--> using get-along Suzie (the person who does what's asked and never questions anything) to lead the project. For a leader, you need a big thinker, a person who asks tough questions initially, so that you save time later on by not having to recreate/redo work.
--> creating a team of queen bees - you need more worker bees.
--> not clearly defining roles and responsibilities. By not making it very clear up front what each person's responsibilities on this project are is an easy way for people to not accept responsibility or take ownership.
--> not knowing what kind of person you need to lead the project. For example, if you have a short time frame, you may want a more authoritative/decisive leader - one who is decisive, quality control, and direct, takes charge, delegates responsibility. Or you may need a persuasive leader - one who builds teams effectively, delegates authority, responsibility and tasks, and influences through determination
By starting out from the very beginning with a clear definition for your project, what's, quality control, needed, and how your team members will fit those needs, you'll find that your project starts smoother, runs efficiently, and finishes successfully.

We've all heard people exclaim clich้s about "exceeding customer expectations" and being "customer-centric" but in reality, those statements are often just disappointing window dressing, quality control, for "business as usual," especially when they employ a grump to be of service to their customers.
In order for a company to deliver on its customer service promises, it has to invest in the systemization of the delivery of its products and services, establish policies that reflect the ethos of serving the customer, properly train the people who work with the customers, and maintain the culture of being customer-centric for the long term. Exemplary customer service is not just the "project of the month." It is a long term commitment and it starts having policies, quality control, and culture in place that reflect the mantra of delivering outstanding customer service and by not hiring grumps to work with customers.
Please realize that I am not discriminating against grumps. The Slippery Slope Of Freedom

You'll hear the term "slippery-slope" used a lot as an excuse why something is bad, because it may or will inevitably lead to things obviously bad. Sometimes that's a valid argument.
But there are other slippery slopes, just as, quality control, obvious, that aren't necessarily a danger inasmuch as we can guard against that first step into the downward slope. Take for example freedom.
Freedom, as we know it in the west, leads to license or the attitude that we can do things considered immoral, because we, quality control, have the right to choose to do so. But license leads to debauchery which leads to corruption which leads to the removal of your freedom either by jail or excessive government regulation. But that slope is avoided by the simple act of self-control. Self-control is the act of surrendering your freedom to a higher, moral law, so that that freedom can remain and be strong. Sort of like the, quality control, idea of putting your money in a bank, so it can be protected. Jim Eliot once said, "he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."
Complete freedom is an illusion because ultimately you'll either be a slave to your own self-control or a slave to the consequences of your immorality.
The most powerful tool for sustaining a free society is capitalism. But capitalism also becomes a pathway toward a slippery-slope, quality control, . If company A can increase their profits or market share with unethical shortcuts, then eventually most if not all its competitors will be forced, quality control, to also adopt those same tactics unless the government steps in. And when the government steps in, it brings big problems with it. Short term, quality control, profits at the expense of long term bureaucratic headaches.
As I've been exploring ways of making money with Google's AdSense, I see the same pattern, over and over again. The White-Hat AdSense people try to stay consistent with Google's policies and, quality, quality control, control, general philosophy, but have to continually adjust their methodology to keep, quality control, up with new regulations Google implements to counter the unethical tactics of the Black-Hat AdSense people. The Black-Hats make quick money exploiting holes in Google's system, holes that exist because Google relies so heavily on computers to determine the way it treats sites listed in its search engine, and displayed in its ads.
I'm also seeing that when businesses get large enough, the personal touch vanishes. Not because it can't be done, it can, but because they don't see the need for it. When facing the choice of a quality product and a quality service at an average price or a cheap product and a bland, cookie-cutter service for a lower price, people gravitate toward the bargains, driving businesses also toward lower quality and impersonal service. Which also means the low quality and low price become the new standards. If the company can compensate with marketing,, quality control, so much the better. Too few people can or are willing, quality control, to discern that crap in a fancy package is still crap. What happens when the crap becomes really bad? Government regulation. Thus, quality control, economic freedom becomes economic license which becomes economic chaos which leads to government, quality control, controls which stifle economic freedom. All because so many abandoned self-control for a few extra bucks.
Whirlpool Corporation is in a constant fight with unions, trying to keep them out of the plants not unionized, trying to keep them in check in plants that are unionized. One solution has been to simply open plants in other countries where they not only don't have to worry about unions, but can pay workers there based on the local, impoverished economy, thereby also becoming a contributor to the mess that drives many of those foreigners to the US as illegal aliens. A reasonable tactic would be to treat their non-union employees decently and fairly, but as we've seen, they don't and apparently have little interest in doing, quality control, so. They seem to care only about appearances.
While the Whirlpool Corporation may appear to be an American company, quality control, it has manufacturing plants in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico; Monterrey, Mexico; Puebla, Mexico; Reynosa, Mexico; Joinville, Brazil; Manaus, Brazil; Rio Claro, Brazil; Sใo Paulo, Brazil; Beijing, China; Shanghai, China; Shunde, China; Faridabad, India; Pondicherry, India; Pune, India; Ranjangaon, India and Spisska Novแ Ves, Slovakia, quality control, . Only 10 of its 39 manufacturing plants are actually in the United States. (the Whirlpool Corporation, quality control, also seems to think that Italy and Slovakia are in "Latin America") Yet according to Motley Fool, North America accounts for 60% of it's roughly $18 billion in annual sales. If Americans can't, quality control, get decent jobs, Americans can't buy things like washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, yet for some reason the Whirlpool Corporation opts for short term profits at the expense of the long term economic stability of its primary market. Does that make sense?
The Whirlpool Corporation's myopic business model will eventually cost them sales, but for now, like so many other businesses, they, quality control, rush to the low side of the boat because it's easier to slide down than climb up, and simply ignore the logic that would tell anyone that by doing so they help capsize the very boat that keeps them afloat.

How Small Business And Nonprofits Can Afford Multimedia For The Web

Multimedia is everywhere on the Internet, whether in the form of floating ads at major websites, streaming video or animated presentations. Of course, there is a good reason why multimedia has become such an integral part of the web experience: it's an effective tool for capturing attention or provoking visitors to buy or contact the site owner. For these reasons, many educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations desire multimedia presentations. Unfortunately, at first glance multimedia, often appears prohibitively expensive for small businesses and non-profits. The following represent a number of ways to control the high cost that typically accompanies, quality control, multimedia production without losing quality. We believe these suggestions will ensure that you save money but still feel good about your investment.
Let's begin by understanding the components of professional multimedia production, which include creative development, actual production, and various stages for revisions.
The lion's share of multimedia production costs typically stems from creative development. This is often the most controversial line item for frugal business owners, who may ask, "shouldn't, quality control, the cost of the creative be part of the design or production costs?" As with fine clothing, where the choice of designer adds to the cost of your product more so than the actual material or sewing, multimedia design costs depend on the creative input as well. For example, if you hire a designer with more experience or with a track record of creating unique, catchy concepts, your creative development costs may be higher. Of course, the final product may result in having a stronger impact as well. The solution isn't to pick the least expensive creative professional, but rather to understand their process in order to help speed production (thus reducing cost).
The second component of multimedia production,, quality control, the design and production of the piece itself, typically requires less guesswork in terms of defining cost. The cost per minute of production depends on a limited number of specific parameters, such as the complexity of the animation and the overall quality of the design agency selected. Generally speaking, there are three types of firms - from a cost perspective - you can choose to work with: a, quality control, purely on-shore, purely off-shore, or a hybrid off-shore/on-shore firm. The type of organization you choose will have a strong correlation with the quality and the price you pay.
The third component, client revisions, is an area controlled most easily and typically is the cause of inflating or deflating multimedia development costs beyond a designer's original estimate, or your expectations. The most basic revisions consist of three rounds: changes to creative concepts, changes to a draft version of the final product, and a final review. Often, more revisions may be needed when a designer is provided with inconsistent or incomplete information. This invariably results in a higher cost than expected.
With the extensive time that some multimedia presentations call for, requiring the efforts of creative professionals and skilled developers, it's not surprising that multimedia presentations and ads can be expensive. Why, then, consider them? Are they effective?
Multimedia presentations are very successful at grabbing people's attention. Multimedia results in higher retention of marketing information by viewers, or more enthusiasm for an offer. When compared to static text, graphics, or even audio, multimedia is simply more compelling due to its ability to trigger multiple senses at the same time..
According to DoubleClick (quoted in ZDNet.com,, quality control, Joseph, 2002) multimedia ads have a 71 percent higher impact than their static counterparts, quality control, . Similarly, in 1997,, quality control, the California Community College system, "implemented a test design to assess the efficacy of, quality control, multimedia technology as a non-traditional form of instruction" (Luna & McKenzie, 1997). Surveys take after, quality control, the test determined, "40% of the students felt multimedia improved understanding and 73% found it a positive addition to the course." One group processed information through a "text-based system" and the other a "multimedia system." The subjects who were tested, quality control, on the basis of a "multimedia system" received a higher mean test score of 2.70 compared to the 2.10 of the text based group (p.114); clearly demonstrating that higher retention is possible with, quality control, multimedia, quality control, . The case, quality control, for implementing multimedia into your marketing, sales or advertising is clear. What can your business or non-profit do to cut its costs?
The first method involves separating the development of the creative (the message,, quality, quality control, control, concepts, and storyboards) from the production (design, animation, and sound production), or at least finding ways to control it.
An article by Mark Frits for EMedia Professional (1997) discussing a fax survey taken of 100 different multimedia production specialists determined, "the creative time spent by designers and project managers, as the most expensive factor of production." Therefore, if a business has already developed a detailed creative concept, storyboard, schematics, or other documentation of what needs to be done, it can reduce the total cost of producing multimedia by utilizing a small design firm or freelancer. Costs are cut because the time and skill spent on one creative is replaced by an in-house team. Of course, to ensure success, only those small, quality control, businesses who believe they possess strong creative assets (with professional advertising or marketing, quality control, expertise) should attempt this approach.
Remember, if you do ask your designer or design firm to handle the creative, that the route of working directly with a designer (rather than a firm with a creative team) may cut costs and also quality. Firms with full time creative professionals that are not involved in day to day design are often, quality control, able to craft unique storyboards that describe and explain products, services, or company mission in memorable ways. Freelancers are a poor choice for strong creative since they often work alone and have limited means to brainstorm and perfect concepts with other creative professionals - a principal differentiating factor and benefit of working with a firm.

However, the tradeoff can be worthwhile if you are able to exert self-discipline. For that reason, when choosing fixed price development, be limited with revisions, as you only get a few as part of a fixed price. Avoid common mistakes such as being unsure of what design direction you desire or being unsure of your marketing message. Carefully consider each deliverable in order to provide all your comments in as few phases as possible - take a couple of days, at least, to do this.
Finally, when working with a firm, make sure that, quality control, you provide them with only one point of contact so they don't spend additional time coordinating, quality control, between people in your company - although seemingly amusing, that mistake is quite common, especially so with growing businesses. Requiring your designer to handle internal coordination of ideas leads, quality control, to dramatic extensions in project timelines, so be sure that you appoint someone internally to act as a point of contact and clearinghouse of internal discussion. Another way to save on multimedia costs is by concentrating on developing, quality control, powerful ideas while keeping implementation simple. When too much time is spent on design and not enough on concept, you will waste production money and effort. To make this strategy effective interview firms that may front load the creative, but also display portfolio pieces that focus on conveying ideas rather than showing off lots of special effects. Work with the designer to simplify the production process by brainstorming easier ways to animate key concepts, and be open to using less labor intensive "vector" animation rather than 3D animations or video production. When it comes to sound, seek out talented and "undiscovered" freelance musicians or voiceover actors working from home who can provide original audio that will cut licensing costs., quality control, .
As a final point, the operational structure of your chosen design firm can impact cost and quality as well. Off-shoring software development is well established, but outsourcing design work abroad is less common and can lead to interesting results due to cultural differences or lack of marketing knowledge, quality control, . At the same time, larger multimedia projects often benefit from repetitive production taking place, quality control, off-shore. Depending on your needs, a "full" off-shore firm with just a sales presence in the US may not be able to provide you with the customer service needed. On the other hand, a fully US firm will likely double your production costs.
The best choice for small businesses is a design firm employing a hybrid approach, where creative development and high level design is handled by professionals that you can meet and build rapport with, but where larger production is handled costs effectively by a well managed offshore team.
By controlling the costs of multimedia your business can afford a highly effective communication tool that can pique site visitors' or ad viewers' interest. Remember these key points:
- Think "simple" when it comes to producing animations - focus on strong ideas instead.
- Be disciplined with your revisions, quality control, to avoid charges for many rounds of changes.
- Take over creative development and let your designers simply produce your vision when your in-house creative is strong. Otherwise seek out a trustworthy design agency, quality control, with a track record of strong creative development.

Multimedia is everywhere on the Internet, whether in the form of floating ads at major websites, streaming video or animated presentations. Of course, there is a good reason why multimedia has become such an integral part of the web experience: it's an effective tool for capturing attention or provoking visitors to buy or contact the site owner. For these reasons, many educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations desire multimedia presentations. Unfortunately, at first glance multimedia, often appears prohibitively expensive for small businesses and non-profits. The following represent a number of ways to control the high cost that typically accompanies, quality control, multimedia production without losing quality. We believe these suggestions will ensure that you save money but still feel good about your investment.
Let's begin by understanding the components of professional multimedia production, which include creative development, actual production, and various stages for revisions.
The lion's share of multimedia production costs typically stems from creative development. This is often the most controversial line item for frugal business owners, who may ask, "shouldn't, quality control, the cost of the creative be part of the design or production costs?" As with fine clothing, where the choice of designer adds to the cost of your product more so than the actual material or sewing, multimedia design costs depend on the creative input as well. For example, if you hire a designer with more experience or with a track record of creating unique, catchy concepts, your creative development costs may be higher. Of course, the final product may result in having a stronger impact as well. The solution isn't to pick the least expensive creative professional, but rather to understand their process in order to help speed production (thus reducing cost).
The second component of multimedia production,, quality control, the design and production of the piece itself, typically requires less guesswork in terms of defining cost. The cost per minute of production depends on a limited number of specific parameters, such as the complexity of the animation and the overall quality of the design agency selected. Generally speaking, there are three types of firms - from a cost perspective - you can choose to work with: a, quality control, purely on-shore, purely off-shore, or a hybrid off-shore/on-shore firm. The type of organization you choose will have a strong correlation with the quality and the price you pay.
The third component, client revisions, is an area controlled most easily and typically is the cause of inflating or deflating multimedia development costs beyond a designer's original estimate, or your expectations. The most basic revisions consist of three rounds: changes to creative concepts, changes to a draft version of the final product, and a final review. Often, more revisions may be needed when a designer is provided with inconsistent or incomplete information. This invariably results in a higher cost than expected.
With the extensive time that some multimedia presentations call for, requiring the efforts of creative professionals and skilled developers, it's not surprising that multimedia presentations and ads can be expensive. Why, then, consider them? Are they effective?
Multimedia presentations are very successful at grabbing people's attention. Multimedia results in higher retention of marketing information by viewers, or more enthusiasm for an offer. When compared to static text, graphics, or even audio, multimedia is simply more compelling due to its ability to trigger multiple senses at the same time..
According to DoubleClick (quoted in ZDNet.com,, quality control, Joseph, 2002) multimedia ads have a 71 percent higher impact than their static counterparts, quality control, . Similarly, in 1997,, quality control, the California Community College system, "implemented a test design to assess the efficacy of, quality control, multimedia technology as a non-traditional form of instruction" (Luna & McKenzie, 1997). Surveys take after, quality control, the test determined, "40% of the students felt multimedia improved understanding and 73% found it a positive addition to the course." Finally, a study published in the Journal of Management Information Systems (Benbasat & Lim, 2002) determined that multimedia "facilitat [es] the retention and subsequent recall of explanative information…" The study consisted of two test groups. One group processed information through a "text-based system" and the other a "multimedia system." The subjects who were tested, quality control, on the basis of a "multimedia system" received a higher mean test score of 2.70 compared to the 2.10 of the text based group (p.114); clearly demonstrating that higher retention is possible with, quality control, multimedia, quality control, . The case, quality control, for implementing multimedia into your marketing, sales or advertising is clear. What can your business or non-profit do to cut its costs?
The first method involves separating the development of the creative (the message,, quality, quality control, control, concepts, and storyboards) from the production (design, animation, and sound production), or at least finding ways to control it.
An article by Mark Frits for EMedia Professional (1997) discussing a fax survey taken of 100 different multimedia production specialists determined, "the creative time spent by designers and project managers, as the most expensive factor of production." Therefore, if a business has already developed a detailed creative concept, storyboard, schematics, or other documentation of what needs to be done, it can reduce the total cost of producing multimedia by utilizing a small design firm or freelancer. Costs are cut because the time and skill spent on one creative is replaced by an in-house team. Of course, to ensure success, only those small, quality control, businesses who believe they possess strong creative assets (with professional advertising or marketing, quality control, expertise) should attempt this approach.
Remember, if you do ask your designer or design firm to handle the creative, that the route of working directly with a designer (rather than a firm with a creative team) may cut costs and also quality. Firms with full time creative professionals that are not involved in day to day design are often, quality control, able to craft unique storyboards that describe and explain products, services, or company mission in memorable ways. Freelancers are a poor choice for strong creative since they often work alone and have limited means to brainstorm and perfect concepts with other creative professionals - a principal differentiating factor and benefit of working with a firm.
If you do select a firm for your creative and production,, quality control, make sure that the creative team understands the message, quality control, you need to convey. Is a creative firm with, quality control, a great portfolio and appealing style really able to promote effectively your product and/or service? Only client testimonials, references, case studies with solid results, or market research, quality control, can tell you this. Even when obtaining the creative from a top line firm, if you do, quality control, your homework, you can still keep costs down. Prepare as much, quality control, information about your target audience, goals, customers, products and services as possible. Develop a few rough concepts of your own, in-house, to help orient the creative team. Finally, discuss these endeavors with your chosen firm up front and negotiate a reduction in fees if you both agree that the information you provide is helpful.
A second way to cut cots is to ask for fixed price development. This direction can mean losing some flexibility in the design of your site. However, the tradeoff can be worthwhile if you are able to exert self-discipline. For that reason, when choosing fixed price development, be limited with revisions, as you only get a few as part of a fixed price. Avoid common mistakes such as being unsure of what design direction you desire or being unsure of your marketing message. Carefully consider each deliverable in order to provide all your comments in as few phases as possible - take a couple of days, at least, to do this.
Finally, when working with a firm, make sure that, quality control, you provide them with only one point of contact so they don't spend additional time coordinating, quality control, between people in your company - although seemingly amusing, that mistake is quite common, especially so with growing businesses. Requiring your designer to handle internal coordination of ideas leads, quality control, to dramatic extensions in project timelines, so be sure that you appoint someone internally to act as a point of contact and clearinghouse of internal discussion. Another way to save on multimedia costs is by concentrating on developing, quality control, powerful ideas while keeping implementation simple. When too much time is spent on design and not enough on concept, you will waste production money and effort. To make this strategy effective interview firms that may front load the creative, but also display portfolio pieces that focus on conveying ideas rather than showing off lots of special effects. Work with the designer to simplify the production process by brainstorming easier ways to animate key concepts, and be open to using less labor intensive "vector" animation rather than 3D animations or video production. When it comes to sound, seek out talented and "undiscovered" freelance musicians or voiceover actors working from home who can provide original audio that will cut licensing costs., quality control, .
As a final point, the operational structure of your chosen design firm can impact cost and quality as well. Off-shoring software development is well established, but outsourcing design work abroad is less common and can lead to interesting results due to cultural differences or lack of marketing knowledge, quality control, . At the same time, larger multimedia projects often benefit from repetitive production taking place, quality control, off-shore. Depending on your needs, a "full" off-shore firm with just a sales presence in the US may not be able to provide you with the customer service needed. On the other hand, a fully US firm will likely double your production costs.
The best choice for small businesses is a design firm employing a hybrid approach, where creative development and high level design is handled by professionals that you can meet and build rapport with, but where larger production is handled costs effectively by a well managed offshore team.
By controlling the costs of multimedia your business can afford a highly effective communication tool that can pique site visitors' or ad viewers' interest. Remember these key points:
- Think "simple" when it comes to producing animations - focus on strong ideas instead.
- Be disciplined with your revisions, quality control, to avoid charges for many rounds of changes.
- Take over creative development and let your designers simply produce your vision when your in-house creative is strong. Otherwise seek out a trustworthy design agency, quality control, with a track record of strong creative development.
- Work with firms that, quality control, employ an optimal mix of US and off-shore, quality control, development.
One never needs to cut out quality while cutting costs. Strong concepts and ideas will make, quality control, the biggest difference in your presentation's success at the end of the day.

Zoran against the World - Entrepreneurship in Transition

Technologically, it is probably the most advanced printing facility in the Balkan. It cost almost $2, quality control, .5 million. It was constructed in less than a year. And it is in dirt-poor and war-torn Macedonia.
Behind this incredible tale of entrepreneurship, uncommon in these nether-regions, stands Zoran Rosomanov. A stereotypical visionary - mane, blazing eyes, imposing physique - this man, against nightmarish odds undreamt,, quality control, quality control, of by his Western counterparts, constructed, single-handedly, an impressive, star-trek like, factory.
Literally single handedly: digging the muddy soil, hoisting bricks onto cranes, driving earth-removal heavy machinery. He begged, cajoled, and persevered. And he made it. His story serves a lesson to all the forlorn dreamers in the sad countries of the East.
Thirty-six year old Zoran represents a new breed, quality control, of "can-do" businessmen in Eastern Europe and the Balkan. His philosophy is the outcome of first-hand exposure to Western management techniques and ideology. He does not rely on the state to provide for him or for his enterprise. He actively seeks foreign inputs - in capital, contacts, and know-how. He is well-traveled, polyglot, affluent, a consumerist. He is enamored with technology and gadgets.
Still, he likes,, quality control, quality control, to think of himself as a creator, or an artist - rather than a money machine. He emphasizes the design-related portions of his company. He brags of his hobbies: photography, interior design, music. His home and office serve to advertise, quality control, not his wealth - but his aesthetically-informed, quality control, talents. He is smartly dressed and well-mannered, indistinguishable from his colleagues in the West. Though he loves Macedonia, his homeland, he is, in essence, a citizen of the world.
Zoran started, quality control, off as a TV music editor in the Macedonian state-owned channel. The highlight of this brief phase in his career was a human rights concert in Budapest. But he soon discovered his true calling: business. He joined a Belgrade-based musical instruments trading firm as a traveling salesman. At the age of 21, he was put in charge of 185 people as head of the Sales Department.
But Yugoslavia was disintegrating. Yugoslavs lost their common identity overnight, quality control, and woke up as Macedonians, Croats, Serbs, or Bosnians. Zoran went back to Skopje, where he opened, with his savings, a chain of 11 stores of electronic consumer goods.
But he noticed that how you sell is at least as important as what you sell. He discovered marketing. After a stint of studies in Milan, Italy, he came back to Macedonia and, in 1992 he established "Divajn". "I noticed that, quality control, everyone in Italy asked me about Macedonia, quality control, . They were interested. So, I decided to connect people." The company was the first to offer a vertical, marketing campaign-orientated service: from poster ads to sales force, a turnkey solution.
He also noticed that, the paperless office notwithstanding, there was a great demand for paper products. In a typical move, Zoran bought an expensive, quality control, computer and began to design such products for, quality control, his contacts. "But I noticed that, following, quality control, a first satisfactory order, they circumvented me and went directly to the printer".
So, he decided to become a printer as well - by merging with a print shop. He placed an ad and settled on one of the applicants. They have been, quality control, inseparable ever since. Their joint company, "Bato and Divajn", owns the new facility and Zoran's partner supervises the daily work there. "Wealth is in people - not in money", says Zoran.
His secretary has been with him for 11 years. Miki, the talented head of the pre-press division, quality control, and quality control, has been working with him for a decade. Zoran values loyalty. He trains his staff personally. Every single one of his 40 workers (soon to increase to 55) has gone through a 6-month period of apprenticeship. Then they, quality control, are on their own. "I believe in delegating," says Zoran, "though I never lose sight of the details. And I am very demanding".
When the combined business expanded,, quality control, Zoran needed new machines. He tried to find investors, both domestic and foreign, but failed. So, he approached a friend of a friend in Holland. This guy owned an envelope factory and was interested to sell one of the used machines for a mere 400 thousand DM (i.e., c. $180,000).
In typical irresistible gall, Zoran offered him $13,000 as an advance payment. "I will pay you the rest over 3 years" - he pledged earnestly. "What is your guarantee?" - asked the shocked seller. "Your trust" - responded Zoran. The stunned Dutchman accepted. Zoran paid him back in two years, quality control, .
This pattern of unmitigated self-confidence, infectious optimism, and non-conformism pervades Zoran's way of doing business. He won an order for a million labels simply by waltzing in and producing samples he scanned off empty beer bottles. He is now the exclusive, quality control, printer for this brewery.
Last April, as he was visiting another client - his firm supplies all the Macedonian blue-chips - he overheard a discussion about problems with a Slovenian supplier. "If I were to establish my own factory here, will you buy from me?" - he enquired. They said yes - and so did many others. "It was my market research" - he grins, quality control, . Why import from Slovenia if there is a qualitative alternative in one's backyard? Zoran is a great believer in import substitution and buying local. It is not only patriotic - but it makes economic sense.
He proceeded forthwith to find land. His firm designed the construction project, quality control, . All he lacked was the printing presses. He had less, quality control, than $100,000 in cash. He needed another $2.4 million. Others would have regarded this deficiency as insurmountable. Not Zoran.
He decided to get the best equipment money could buy -, quality control, and that meant "Heidelberg". So, he picked up the phone and called Alexander Hufnagel, Heidelberg's director, quality control, of East Europe. When he asked to buy on credit, they naturally demanded a bank guarantee. Zoran prepared a business plan and went to Komercijalna Banka, Macedonia's second largest retail bank. He asked for $1 million, partly from IFC funds dedicated to small and medium enterprises.
Macedonia's economy has been in dire straits long before its independence in 1992. Nearly one third of the workforce are unemployed. The heavily-politicized and under-capitalized banking system is largely dysfunctional. Lending to business is almost at a standstill. Zoran's was an unprecedented application.
When Zoran dug the first foundations in an industrial park at the outskirts of Skopje, a civil war between Macedonians and Albanians has erupted. Fighter planes and helicopters buzzed above, quality control, head and police and army streamed to the Aracinovo, a besieged, quality control, village, not far from the site. There was palpable panic in the air.
Komercijalna Banka asked for a collateral and Zoran offered the new equipment. "Title will revert to me only when I finish paying you", he explained. Unbeknownst to him he has invented leasing. He then turned around and offered Komercijalna's money to Heidelberg as his equity. After a grueling few days of due diligence, Heidelberg agreed to give him supplier's credit amounting to the rest. They asked to him to guarantee the credit personally. He willingly accepted.
Zoran then proceeded to convince them to establish a maintenance center, replete with spare parts, in his new factory. "I don't charge them rent" - he discloses impishly - "My machines must work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is useful to have a maintenance crew and spare parts handy." The next logical step, quality control, is to become their representative in Macedonia. "I am working on it. But I want them to provide me with revolving credit to be able to offer financing together with the equipment".
But this financial wizardry has, quality control, depleted Zoran's resources. He resorted to an old communist stratagem: the barter ("compensation" in East European argot). He traded print jobs for building materials, quality control, . It was one of the worst arctic winters in memory with temperatures often dropping to way below the freezing point. But construction continued, the shivering workers spurred on by Zoran's personal example.
When the equipment finally arrived, Zoran was presented with a $450,000 bill - for the newly imposed Value Added Tax. In a complex financial somersault, Zoran borrowed against future VAT refunds and overcame this obstacle as well. The NASA-like control panel, the printers, cutters, templates for different cigarette brands - all were finally installed in the half completed structure.
"This is my country" - Zoran toggles, quality control, an unlit smoke - "It is beautiful. We just need help. I could never have done it without the help extended to me by Heidelberg, Komercijalna, the IFC, my clients. My wife stood behind me. This network of support is indispensable. There can be no entrepreneurship and initiative without it!"
"Aren't you afraid to fail?"
"I have no fear. With all our problems - we still must exist. We must survive. Many say I am crazy - but time will tell who, quality control, will succeed. You must persevere. If the bank would have said no -, quality control, I would have gone elsewhere. There is always a solution. My advice: get your suppliers involved. Heidelberg now has a stake and they will refer clients to me. I said to them: you want me as a client? Then give me credit!"
"Operating in Macedonia is not easy..."
"A country should be run like a business and politicians should act like CEO's. Macedonia has the potential to be this region's Switzerland, though it must concentrate on exploiting its natural endowments: climate and soil. Agri-business is its future. All we have to do is encourage foreign investments by safeguarding property rights and overhauling the court system and law enforcement. We have to learn from foreign investors and emulate them, quality control, ."
"But foreign investors are potentially your competitors..."
He tilts his head back and laughs uproariously:
"The Slovenians tried to arm-twist my clients, slander me, and spy on my operations. I can now easily compete with them in the Serb market. My transport costs are much lower. My machinery is so advanced that I can work for the strictest multinational anywhere from Switzerland to Turkey. We are getting the ISO quality certificate shortly. So, they are scared. What has been my response? I bought more land for future expansion..."
