Maternity Care Experts To Speak at CIMS Second National Mother-Friendly Childbirth Forum

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL January 31 2004--The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) is sponsoring its second Annual Mother-Friendly Childbirth Forum on February 26, 2004 at, quality control, the Sheraton-Reston in Reston, Virginia. In accordance with its mission to promote a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs, CIMS has invited maternity care experts and researchers to address,, quality control, quality control, critical issues, quality control, affecting the health and well being of childbearing women and their infants.



The forum will include information on the need for political change to improve the quality of maternity care, the high cost of healthcare both in human resources and healthcare dollars, and effecting change in the cultural misperceptions, quality control, about the value of technology-intensive birth which science has shown is harmful to healthy mothers and babies.



CIMS, quality control, is honored to announce the participation of Dr. Suzanne Hayes, senior science advisor in the Department of Health and Human, quality control, Services Office of Women's Health who will speak on the public health impact of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Public Health Breastfeeding Specialist, Katherine Shealy, MPH, IBCLC, of the Maternal Child Nutrition Branch , Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.will address the need for a national assessment and monitoring of evidence-based maternity care practices and their impact on breastfeeding in the US.



Noted experts and advocates for evidence-based maternity care Marion McCartney, CNM , BSN, Director of Professional Education at the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM). Sharron S. Humenick, Ph.D. professor of maternal and child nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Raymond De Vries PhD, expert on the cultural context of midwifery care, Susan Hodges, president of the consumer advocate group Citizens for Midwifery, noted author Henci Goer, and Cathy Holland, RN, BS, LCCE, CLC currently on the External Review team for Baby Friendly USA have also graciously accepted CIMS' invitation to participate in the forum.



The speakers will present on the superior outcomes, quality control, and cost-benefits of the midwifery model of care, the economic disincentives to hospitals and physicians of mother-friendly birth practices, the need for health-promoting and, quality control, stress reducing support throughout the prenatal period, the symbiotic relationship between birth practices and breastfeeding, and the cultural warping of evidence-based medicine.



In the light of the recently released National Healthcare Quality, quality control, Report by the Department of Health and Human Services calling for the establishment of high quality, preventive, evidence-based and cost-effective health care for all Americans,, quality control, CIMS, a volunteer, non-profit organization and a recognized United Nations NGO, is once again taking a leadership role in encouraging and assisting maternity care professionals to implement safe and appropriate birth practices by following the recommendations of its Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI), an evidence-based, quality-improvement model developed to improve the health and well-being of childbearing mothers and their children.



The forum will be of particular interest to hospital administrators, policy makers, care providers, lactation consultants,, quality control, perinatal educators, doulas/labor support professionals, and the media.
